Seven Misconceptions about Physical Therapy you should Not Believe

Physical therapists are experts with movements who help people with their pain, restore their mobility, and stay active throughout life. However, those who never get physical therapy before misinterpret what these therapists do. Below are some of the common misconceptions which usually discourage people from working with a physical therapist:

You Cannot See a Physical Therapist without a Doctor’s Referral

A lot of people have to deal with pain for a long time because they assume they have to see a doctor first and get a referral before they can be treated by a physical therapist. However, this is a misconception. The truth is that you can always schedule a therapy appointment without seeing a doctor first.

Physical Therapy is Painful

A physical therapist will strive to reduce the pain and discomfort their patient feels. You can expect them to work within your pain threshold to help your body heal as well as restore your movement and function.

Physical Therapy is about Massage Only

Although physical therapy includes massage therapy, there are other treatments the therapist may give you depending on your condition. For instance, the therapist may give you a hot and cold treatment, dry needling, manual therapy, and whatever they deem necessary for your unique condition.

It is Only for Injuries

While a physical therapist treats patients who sustain injuries after an accident, they also treat others in varying circumstances and conditions. From lymphedema treatment to sports performance enhancement, they work in an all-encompassing field. In fact, they can also make care plans for their patients who have diabetes to help them live a healthier life. Because of the many benefits of physical therapy to the body, a lot of people can take advantage of it no matter what their situation is.

Physical Therapy can be Performed by any Healthcare Professional

A lot of consumers know that physical therapy can be carried out only by a licensed physical therapist, but some still think other health care professionals can also perform it. Many physical therapists expand their coverage even further by pursuing board certification in areas like orthopedics, neurology, sports, and women’s health.  Thus, ensure you seek only the guidance of a licensed therapist.

Insurance Does not Cover the Therapy

The majority of insurance cover some kind of physical therapy. This therapy actually helps in reducing health care costs by helping people who use their benefits for minimizing unnecessary prescriptions, surgery, and imaging scans.

You can Do it Yourself

Although your therapy plan can only be successful when you actively participate in it, you must work with the expert in the field who will give you proper guidance and care. A licensed physical therapist will leverage their education and expertise to assess your needs and come up with a diagnosis before they make an individualized care plan for you.

Never let these myths stop you from starting your journey to recovery. In case you have questions on treatment, diagnosis, and insurance, get in touch with a reputable physical therapist as those at https://acaciaplein.nl.
